5 Benefits Of Art For The Society

Art is the one thing any age can join in with & my children sit down and draw, make up stories to go with their drawings. There is 9 years difference between them but art is an amazing bridge regardless of ability because all art work is original & cannot be judged. – Michelle Treasure

5 Benefits of Art for the society

When we think of art or being an artist, we often get a far away perspective and have a tendency to dismiss the art world as being too fancy if we are not from it. Art is often perceived to be unattainable, too creative to try, and non-economical. In this art blog, we are going to share with you why this is so far away from reality.

Art for mental health

Indulging in any sort of creative activity is known to be a mood booster. It instantly makes you feel calm and less stresses. Specially during the Covid-19 pandemic, there was a notable increase in people reaching to art for work life balance. In some cases, art even helped save lives, by acting as an outlet for creative expression and regulating extreme emotions.

In terms of effects on society, participation in the arts can contribute to community cohesion, reduce social exclusion and isolation, and/or make communities feel safer and stronger.

Art for Tourism

Art for Tourism is a gold mine that is yet to be dug in most developing countries. The smart ones are already using it. We have strong evidence to believe that most international trips we take, have the obvious motivation of looking at and exploring the artworks of that place. While in our own places, art’s potential could be left wasted if it’s not valued enough.

Arts and culture boost local economies by attracting visitors, creating jobs and developing skills, attracting and retaining local businesses, and developing talent.

Art for business

Each year, non-profit arts and culture organizations alone pump an estimated $60 billion into the national economy of US. The creative industries in UK are the fastest growing industry of all. The film industry in India, has one of the largest box office grosses in the world.

Looking at the holistic picture tells us that when a city holds a festival or fair, it not only employees the performing artists or the fine artists, it generates employment for the food vendors and the transport vendors as well. This concept makes the basis of creative economy, which a fairly new concept countries across the world are waking up to.

 Art for Culture

Art makes us more human. It increases our social interaction, makes us more confident and give us a sense of freedom and control. Research has even shown that cities that emphasize art have more civic and social engagement, better child welfare and even lower poverty rates.

The fact that creative activities in the prisons, hospital and old age home have been known to have unbelievably delightful improvements on the lives of the people living there, tells us how important art is for culture.

Art for Young Minds

In the education system, taking part in structured music activities improves attainment in maths, early language acquisition and early literacy. Schools that integrate arts across the curriculum, have shown consistently higher average reading and mathematics scores compared to similar schools that do not. Studies show that children who are exposed to art in their early years, become more confident and self-assured adults.

While these reasons make it easy to understand that art is good for the society, it depends on us to invite art into our personal and professional lives. An ocean is made with each drop, and change starts from you. So tell us, how are you going to interact with art today?
