Metropolitan Museum Of Art

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City is one of the world's largest museums. Its site in Central Park includes about 2 million works of art covering much of human culture's history. The museum is well-known for its world-class paintings, but it also exhibits ceramics, musical instruments, historical objects, costumes, and even firearms.

Foundation of Metropolitan Museum Of Art

The Metropolitan Museum of Art was founded in 1870 by a group of citizens who sought to bring art to the general population. The museum began with three private painting collections, but it quickly expanded to include many more. The Metropolitan Museum Of Art moved to its current Central Park location in 1880 and began growing by 1888. Expansions have entirely encircled the original structure. The most recent architectural plan, which aimed to make the museum more accessible, began in 1971 and ended in 1991.

Collections

The museum began with a collection of 174 European paintings and has since grown to over 2,000 European artworks spanning the 12th to 19th centuries. This collection features works by masters such as Vermeer, Rembrandt, Caravaggio, and Raphael.

Around 20 permanent collections are now housed at the museum. The Cloisters' illuminated volumes and stained glass are part of two separate collections dedicated to mediaeval art. Sculptures from Asia, Egyptian antiquities, Roman vases, African masks, and Islamic artefacts from throughout history are among the many cultures represented.

Other collections include first editions in the Library, tapestries and lace in the Antonio Ratti Textile Center, photographs, modern art, drawings, prints and paintings, sculpture and woodwork from throughout American history, and photographs, modern art, drawings, prints and paintings in the Antonio Ratti Textile Center.

The Michael C. Rockefeller Wing's African Art

Nearly 3,000 pieces by artists from across Sub-Saharan Africa are represented in the Museum’s collection, which spans two millennia, several hundred unique cultures, and 39 contemporary country states.

The United States Wing

Since its founding in 1870, the Museum has amassed significant collections of American art. The American Wing's ever-changing collection now includes more than 20,000 pieces by African American, Euro-American, Native American, and Latin American artists, spanning the colonial to early-modern periods.

Art from the Ancient Near East

The Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection of ancient Near Eastern art contains about 7,000 pieces dating from the eighth millennium B.C. to the ages soon after the Arab conquests of the seventh century A.D. The art of the ancient Near East reflects the diverse peoples, towns, kingdoms, and empires that existed in the region throughout thousands of years in a wide range of forms and styles. There was, however, stability and continuity in the middle of this multiplicity. One of the most constant and primary goals of ancient Near Eastern art was to represent the interaction between the terrestrial and divine realms, which is shown in some of the collection's most notable works. These images were supposed to communicate to both human and divine audiences, whether in the form of a votive sculpture committed in a god's temple to worship in perpetuity or a statue of a pious monarch who was guided by the gods in all his activities.

Contemporary and Modern Art

The Metropolitan Museum of Art's Modern and Contemporary Art department is dedicated to the study, collection, and exhibition of art from 1890 to the present day. Multiple modernities and different contemporary practices have been shaped through artistic responses to seismic cultural, social, and political developments across the globe. The department is dedicated to highlighting the interrelated and richly varied themes and experiences that shape art from throughout the world during this time period. Historically focused on Western European and North American art, Modern and Contemporary Art has greatly expanded and diversified its collections since 2012, particularly through works by women and artists of color, with a focus on acquisitions from Latin America, South Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa.

Prints and drawings

The Metropolitan Museum Of Art's drawing and print collection, which is one of the most comprehensive and prestigious in the world, began in 1880 with a gift of 670 works from Cornelius Vanderbilt, a Museum trustee. From roughly 1400 to the present, the Department's large collection of works on paper includes approximately 21,000 drawings, 1.2 million prints, and 12,000 illustrated volumes published in Europe and the Americas.

Greek & Roman Art

The Museum's Greek and Roman art collection has about 30,000 works dating from the Neolithic period (ca. 4500 B.C.) through the conversion of Roman Emperor Constantine to Christianity in A.D. 312. The geographical bounds of Roman art correspond to the Roman Empire's expansion. Prehistoric Greek art (Helladic, Cycladic, and Minoan) and pre-Roman art of Italic peoples, particularly the Etruscans, are also on display in the department.

Paintings from Europe

More than 2,500 pieces of art from the fourteenth to the early twentieth centuries are housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's famed European Paintings collection. Apart from individual masterpieces by artists as diverse as Jan van Eyck, Caravaggio, and Gustav Klimt, The Museum boasts a diverse collection of early Italian and Northern art, as well as one of the world's most comprehensive collections of seventeenth-century Dutch paintings, including works by Frans Hals, Rembrandt, and Johannes Vermeer. The El Greco and Goya collections in the Museum are among the best outside of Spain. Its galleries of nineteenth-century French paintings are second only to those of Paris' museums in terms of depth, with works by Gustave Courbet, Edgar Degas, Édouard Manet, Claude Monet, Paul Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh, and others on display. As a result, The Museum collection spans more than 5000 years of art history, from the earliest cities of the ancient world to contemporary works.

Paintings have played an important role in every era. Paintings are not only regarded as a luxury but are also seen as a way for diverse artists from the past to leave a mark on the artworks that they have created by them. We at Pranjal Arts would also welcome you to look through our painting collection www.pranjalarts.com, which was created by local artists because local artists must be given equal priority in order to grow and make a name for themselves in the fine art field.
