What Are The Creative Industries?

The term ‘creative industries’ describes businesses with creativity at their heart- for example design, music, publishing, architecture, film and video, crafts, visual arts, fashion tv, and radio, advertising, literature, computer games and the performing arts. Creative Industries was a term coined by the United Kingdom and its original definition formulated by the UK government in 1998. Creative industries was defined as those industries which have their origin in individual creativity, skill and talent and which have the potential for wealth and job creation through the generation and exploitation of intellectual property.

Creative industries have been seen to become increasingly important to economic well-being. Creative industries are those based on individual creativity, skill and talent, or which have the potential to create wealth and jobs through the development or production of intellectual property. The creative industries are one of the world’s most rapidly growing economic sectors. However, there is a need to find new areas of improvement that encourage innovation and development, and research shows that culture and creativity has an increasing influence on both sustainability and resilient growth.             

The Creative Industry has become an interestingly strategic sector to boost competitiveness, productivity, employment and sustainable economic growth. Things to keep in mind for the development of creative sector in the economy are:

1)     Firstly, recognize that, in addition to its economic benefits, the creative economy also generates non-monetary value that contributes significantly to achieving inclusive and sustainable societal development.  

2)     Examine the critical success factors that contribute to forgoing new pathways for local creative economic development.

3)     Make culture a driver and enable economic, social and environmental development processes, since positive changes can take place only in a culturally defined society.

4)     Reveal opportunities through mapping local assets of the creative economy.

5)     Mainstream culture into local economic and social development programmes, make it number one, even when faced with competing priorities.

The creative economy is a developing concept based on creative assets potentially generating economic growth and improvements. Creative industries offer many opportunities to people and also generate revenue for the economy. Also, it is a knowledge-based economic activity with a development dimension, it can foster income generation, job creation, and export earnings while promoting social inclusion, cultural diversity and human development. It embraces economic, cultural and social aspects interacting with technology, intellectual property and tourism objectives; At the heart of the creative economy are the creative industries.

In the context, these creative industries are further recognized separately as film industry, fashion industry, tech industry and so on. Gradually the government and policy making bodies are learning to understand the economic benefits of creative industries and blending them in their efforts to impact tourism, through the Smart City plan in tier 2 and tier 3 cities.
