Holi Celebration: Why do we celebrate?

Holi is the most favourite festival of Hindus, loved by people of all age groups. It is a festival of colors. This festival comes on a full moon day in the  Month of Phalgun. According to Hindu Calendar, every year is celebrated with great joy and happiness.

WHO CELEBRATES HOLI?

Holi, the Festival of Colours is widely celebrated in India, Nepal and many other places among the Hindu population. But in recent times, this festival has also gained a lot of popularity among Non-Hindus.

WHY IS HOLI CELEBRATED?

This festival has a mythological story behind it. In the olden times there was a Demon King named Hiranya Kashyap, who had a son, named Prahlad. Prahlad was blessed by Lord Vishnu as he was a great devotee of  Lord Vishnu. Prahlad’s devotion enraged Hiranya Kashyap and he made a plan to kill his son Prahlad. Hiranya Kashyap asked his sister Holika who had the power to get immune from fire, to take his son  Prahald and sit in the fire. Prahlad was a blessed child. He was blessed by Lord Vishnu. So when Holika sat with Prahlad on her lap in the fire, Prahlad was saved and Holika got burnt. Hence, this is a celebration of the victory of good over evil and people burn Holika which is popularly known as ‘Holika Dehan’.

The next morning people celebrate Holi with colors and Gulals. They throw water balloons on each other and visit friends and families to play Holi. Indeed, this is the FESTIVAL OF COLOURS. Everyone sprinkles color on each other using water guns, Pichkari, buckets etc.

How is Holi celebrated today?

Lately people have become more conscious and do not prefer using synthetic colours but use natural colours that are made from flowers and vegetables. The whole atmosphere is made even more lively with music (bhajans) and people dance to the tunes while enjoying the colors. People celebrate Holi by eating yummy dishes like jalebi, gujiya, sweets, dahi bhalle, chips and so many others and also distribute sweets to friends and relatives.
