Indian Art in London

Indian Art is one of the most known styles across the world.

With a very long history behind Indian Art, the paintings hold a special sentiment and meaning in the hearts of all Indians.

Over time, many Indian artists were overlooked due to colonization.

Recent contemporary Indian artists showcase the emotions and feelings of the modern world through their paintings.

Some notable Indian painters are Raja Ravi Verma, M.F.Husain, Raza, Sher-Gil, and many more.

The Wallace Collection: The Indian artists, who were once forgotten after immortalizing the wonders of nature in paint, are now being given their due.

Their paintings are being showcased in many exhibitions across London. 109 paintings of people, plants, and animals were commissioned by East India Company officials between the 1770s and 1840s, as shown in a recent exhibition at the Wallace Collection in London.

For the first time, beautiful colonial-era paintings by painters like Shaikh Zain ud-Din, Bhawani Das, and Ghulam Ali Khan have been brought together in a major exhibition that shifts the spotlight away from the 'Company School' of painting and onto lesser-known artists.

'Forgotten Masters: Indian Painting for the East India Company,' curated by writer William Dalrymple, has been presented at the Wallace Collection till April, displaying artwork from various collections around the world.

The exhibition highlights the conversation between traditional Indian, Islamic and Western schools and features works from Mughal, Marathi, Punjabi, Pahari, Tamil, and Telugu artists.

The paintings were commissioned by East India Company officials and their families, as well as nomadic British painters and thinkers touring through India for pleasure and teaching, between the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century.

The exhibition ultimately celebrates unjustly forgotten artists such as Shaikh Zain ud-Din, Bhawani Das, Shaikh Mohammad Amir of Karriah, Sita Ram, Bahadur Singh, Mihr Chand, and Ghulam Ali Khan.
